Russia accused of EU and Nato cyber-attacks

The UK, US and other western intelligence agencies have warned that Russian military intelligence has been behind a series of cyber-attacks on Nato and EU countries.

They said the attacks were carried out by Russian military intelligence’s (GRU) Unit 29155, which has been linked to the poisonings of a former Russian double agent and his daughter in Salisbury in 2018.

According to the agencies, the attacks involved espionage, sabotage, defacing websites and publishing stolen data.

Their warning comes amid increased fears in Europe of suspected Russian hackers and spies since Russia’s war on Ukraine began two years ago.

Alongside the UK and US, the agencies issuing the warning include Germany, Australia, Ukraine, Canada, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Estonia and the Netherlands.

They said that Unit 29155 had already been involved in attempted coups, sabotage and assassination attempts have been moving into cyber operations since at least 2020.

Companies in the financial, transport, energy and health sectors are among those that have reportedly been targeted in Nato member, EU, Central American, and Asian countries.

It is thought the primary intention of Unit 29155 appeared to be to disrupt aid deliveries to Ukraine.
