Hackers, researchers, cybersecurity<\/span>\u00a0companies and government officials descended on Las Vegas last week for Black Hat and Def Con, a cybersecurity double-bill that\u2019s collectively referred to as \u201chacker summer camp.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s cyber gathering was particularly exciting: Not only did it mark Black Hat\u2019s 25th anniversary, but also the first time since the start of the pandemic that attendees have fully returned to the carpeted hallways of the popular security conferences. This meant that amid the\u00a0mask confusion<\/a>\u00a0and subsequent influx of\u00a0positive<\/a>\u00a0tests,\u00a0<\/a>there was a lot for the hacking community to catch up on.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve rounded up some of the best announcements from the two shows.<\/p>\n

Starlink hacked with $25 homemade modchip<\/h2>\n

A cybersecurity researcher revealed it\u2019s possible to hack into Starlink terminals using a $25 device. Belgian security researcher Lennert Wouters took to the stage at Black Hat on Thursday to showcase how he was\u00a0able to hack StarLink\u2019s user terminals<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 referred to as \u201cDishy McFlatface<\/a>\u201d by Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX employees \u2014 using a homemade circuit board, or \u201cmodchip.\u201d This gadget permits a fault injection attack that bypasses Starlink\u2019s security system and allows access to control functions that Starlink had intended to keep locked down. Wouters revealed the vulnerability to SpaceX last year, earning his place in the company\u2019s bug bounty hall of fame. Following his talk, SpaceX responded with a\u00a0six-page paper<\/a>\u00a0explaining how it secures its systems along with a firmware update that \u201cmakes the attack harder, but not impossible, to execute.\u201d<\/p>\n
