What we have seen recently is an actual piece of good news on the cybersecurity front. Positive Technologies experts have\u00a0analyzed\u00a0the Q3 2021 cybersecurity threats and found a\u00a0decrease in\u00a0the number of\u00a0unique cyberattacks. Even while the total number of attacks has decreased, there\u2019s been an\u00a0increase in\u00a0the share of\u00a0attacks against individuals and a\u00a0rise in\u00a0attacks involving remote access malware.<\/p>\n<p id=\"native_64489\" class=\"inline-related\"><b>Related:<\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designnews.com\/industry\/10-top-trends-cybersecurity-2022\">10 Top Trends in Cybersecurity for 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The number of\u00a0attacks in\u00a0Q3\u00a0decreased by\u00a04.8% compared to\u00a0the previous quarter. This is the first time since the end of\u00a02018 that Positive Technologies has recorded a\u00a0negative trend. The researchers believe one reason for the change is\u00a0the decrease in\u00a0ransomware attacks and the fact that some major players have quit the stage. This has resulted in the share of\u00a0attacks on corporate computers, servers,\u00a0and network equipment falling from\u00a087% to\u00a075%.<\/p>\n<p>The cyber threats during 3Q of 2021 were a mixed bag even though the net result was positive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The number of attacks during the period decreased by 4.8% compared to the previous quarter\u2014the first time since the end of 2018 that Positive Technologies recorded a negative trend<\/li>\n<li>The share of attacks aimed at compromising corporate computers, servers, and network equipment fell from 87% to 75%<\/li>\n<li>Although the share of malware attacks on organizations decreased by 22%, attackers&#8217; appetite for data led to an increase in the use of remote access trojans, which increased 2.5 times over Q1 2021<\/li>\n<li>Compared to the same period last year, the share of social engineering attacks against individuals increased from 67 to 83%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"native_61558\" class=\"inline-related\"><b>Related:<\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designnews.com\/industry\/implementing-cybersecurity-threat-prediction-medical-devices\">Implementing Cybersecurity Threat Prediction for Medical Devices<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We caught up with Ekaterina Kilyusheva, head of research and analytics at Positive Technologies, to get further details into the nature of cyber threats going forward.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Design News: Are the positive results a matter of better protection, or have cybercriminals moved on to other activities?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ekaterina Kilyusheva:<\/strong>\u00a0One key reason for the decrease in unique cyberattacks is the decrease in ransomware attacks and the fact that some major players have quit the stage. This is also why the share of attacks aimed at compromising corporate computers, servers, and network equipment has fallen, from 87% to 75%.<\/p>\n<p>This year we saw the peak of ransomware attacks in April when 120 attacks were recorded.\u00a0There were 45 attacks in September, down 63% from the peak in April. The reason is that several large ransomware gangs stopped their operation, and law enforcement agencies started paying more\u00a0attention\u00a0to the problem of ransomware attacks.
