{"id":789,"date":"2021-12-17T14:47:51","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T14:47:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tsfactory.com\/forums\/?p=789"},"modified":"2021-12-17T14:52:45","modified_gmt":"2021-12-17T14:52:45","slug":"grindrs-8-5m-fine-slashed-despite-illegally-sharing-users-data-in-worrying-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tsfactory.com\/forums\/blog\/grindrs-8-5m-fine-slashed-despite-illegally-sharing-users-data-in-worrying-breach\/","title":{"rendered":"Grindr\u2019s \u00a38.5m fine slashed despite illegally sharing users\u2019 data in worrying breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The dating app was fined by Norway\u2019s Data Protection Authority (DPA) for illegally sharing\u00a0detailed user data with third party advertisers, including users\u2019 IP addresses, GPS locations, age and gender.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinknews.co.uk\/2021\/01\/26\/grindr-fine-user-data-protection-privacy-consent-advertising-norway\/\">At the time the original fine was issued<\/a>, the head of the DPA\u2019s international department, Tobias Judin, said the fact that Grindr is an LGBT+ app makes the breach all the more serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf someone finds out they are gay and knows their movements, they may be harmed,\u201d he said in January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to make these apps and services understand that this approach \u2013 not informing users, not gaining a valid consent to share their data \u2013 is completely unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DPA said at the time it would fine the company 100 million crowns (around \u00a38 million).<\/p>\n<p>However, on Wednesday (15 December) it confirmed that the fine was reduced due to changes Grindr has made \u201cto remedy the deficiencies in their previous consent-management platform\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Judin said in a statement: \u201cOur conclusion is that Grindr has disclosed user data to third parties for behavioural advertisement without a legal basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a January statement to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/25\/business\/grindr-gdpr-privacy-fine.html\"><i>\u00a0the New York Times<\/i><\/a>, a spokesperson for Grindr said the company had obtained \u201cvalid legal consent from all\u201d of its users in Europe on multiple occasions and was confident that its \u201capproach to user privacy is first in class\u201d among social apps.<\/p>\n<p>The company added: \u201cWe continually enhance our privacy practices in consideration of evolving privacy laws and regulations, and look forward to entering into a productive dialogue with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dating app now has the right to appeal the DPA\u2019s decision within three weeks.<\/p>\n<p><i>PinkNews<\/i>\u00a0has approached Grindr for comment on these latest developments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinknews.co.uk\/2021\/12\/15\/grindr-fine\/\">Read the Full Story Here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source: Pink News<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The dating app was fined by Norway\u2019s Data Protection Authority (DPA) for illegally sharing\u00a0detailed user data with third party advertisers, including users\u2019 IP addresses, GPS locations, age and gender.
