{"id":563,"date":"2021-04-23T13:44:52","date_gmt":"2021-04-23T13:44:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tsfactory.com\/forums\/?p=563"},"modified":"2021-04-23T13:44:52","modified_gmt":"2021-04-23T13:44:52","slug":"gchq-chief-west-faces-moment-of-reckoning-over-cybersecurity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tsfactory.com\/forums\/blog\/gchq-chief-west-faces-moment-of-reckoning-over-cybersecurity\/","title":{"rendered":"GCHQ chief: west faces \u2018moment of reckoning\u2019 over cybersecurity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-1yqigsj\">Britain and its allies face a \u201cmoment of reckoning\u201d in which secure encryption and other future technologies may no longer be \u201cshaped and controlled by the west\u201d, according to the head of the spy agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/gchq\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">GCHQ<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1yqigsj\">In a speech on Friday, Jeremy Fleming will say the UK has to \u201cdevelop sovereign technologies\u201d and work with allies to \u201cbuild better cyberdefences\u201d to prosper in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1yqigsj\">Although the spy chief does not mention China by name, his remarks are largely aimed at Beijing\u2019s growing strength in high technology, revealed recently by the row over the deployment of Huawei kit in Britain\u2019s 5G mobile phone networks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1yqigsj\">There are also growing concerns about Russian state-sponsored hacking. This is showing signs of increasing sophistication, as demonstrated by the recent exploitation of a vulnerability in SolarWinds software used in several US government departments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1yqigsj\">\u201cCybersecurity is an increasingly strategic issue that needs a whole-nation approach. The rules are changing in ways not always controlled by government,\u201d Fleming is expected to say in a speech at Imperial College London. \u201cAnd without action it is increasingly clear that the key technologies on which we will rely for our future prosperity and security won\u2019t be shaped and controlled by the west.
