{"id":533,"date":"2021-03-23T13:23:01","date_gmt":"2021-03-23T13:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tsfactory.com\/forums\/?p=533"},"modified":"2021-03-23T13:23:01","modified_gmt":"2021-03-23T13:23:01","slug":"space-jam-researchers-and-satellite-start-ups-meet-to-discuss-celestial-cybersecurity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tsfactory.com\/forums\/blog\/space-jam-researchers-and-satellite-start-ups-meet-to-discuss-celestial-cybersecurity\/","title":{"rendered":"Space jam: Researchers and satellite start-ups meet to discuss celestial cybersecurity"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>End of an era<\/h3>\n<p>James Pavur, a security researcher and Oxford University PhD student who has done extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/portswigger.net\/daily-swig\/research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> into <a href=\"https:\/\/portswigger.net\/daily-swig\/top-hacks-from-black-hat-and-def-con-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">satellite broadband security risks<\/a>, told <span class=\"italic\">The Daily Swig<\/span> that the era when satellite systems were beyond the reach of hackers is coming to an end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSatellite systems used to be made up of expensive kit, about which there was not much info, that were highly customised and bespoke,\u201d Pavur explained.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the glamorous allure of getting into satellite systems, malicious hackers were effectively dissuaded from chancing their arm by \u201csecurity through obscurity\u201d \u2013 something the space industry can no longer count on after borrowing standardized hardware and software development practices from IoT and enterprise systems, according to Pavur.<\/p>\n<p>Security incidents involving satellite systems have historically involved breaking into Windows computers in ground stations (\u201cthe weakest link\u201d, said Pavur) but now more thought is being put into radio frequency exploits.<\/p>\n<h3>Immature practices<\/h3>\n<p>This is a concern for the future because some in the space industry still transmit telemetry protocols with no cryptographic protections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re better at understanding how to secure ground computers than how to secure satellites,\u201d according to Pavur.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fi.linkedin.com\/in\/ignacio-chechile-101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ignacio Chechile<\/a>, CTO at space start-up ReOrbit, backed up Pavur\u2019s assessment that immature cybersecurity practices were common in the space industry by referring to one unnamed operator that used Telnet to communicate with a satellite over an unencrypted <a href=\"https:\/\/standards.nasa.gov\/ccsds-standards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CCSDS<\/a> link.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-center\"><span class=\"bold\">DON\u2019T FORGET TO READ<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/portswigger.net\/daily-swig\/cybersecurity-conferences-2021-a-schedule-of-virtual-and-potentially-in-person-or-hybrid-events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cybersecurity conferences 2021: A schedule of virtual, and potentially in-person or \u2018hybrid\u2019, events<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is an area of potential exposure because a hobbyist can now, for just a few hundred euros, buy hardware that would allow them to track a satellite.
