This helped normalize the tech, according to Jason Van der Schyff, a fellow of cyber, technology and security\u00a0at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, who noted it is now embedded across much of the automotive sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe technology is increasingly welcomed as it is a quick and cost-effective way to manage systems on vehicles, over traditional methods which may have required a recall or update at routine maintenance,\u201d Siraj Ahmed Shaikh, professor in systems security at Swansea University in the U.K, told CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>The growing penetration of OTA technology in the auto industry has raised concerns, however, particularly regarding transportation infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Its use represents \u201ca unique national security concern,\u201d Gabriel Lim, senior analyst at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies\u00a0in Singapore, told CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAside from data privacy concerns, the potential of a foreign actor sabotaging the controls of a moving vehicle is a possibility that countries like Norway, Denmark, and Britain have expressed concerns about,\u201d Lim added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<p>In May, the\u00a0American Enterprise Institute warned that safeguarding the automotive sector was crucial to limit foreign governments\u2019 espionage capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo protect against foreign espionage threats, the US should consider additional security reviews, implement restrictions on certain foreign-made hardware and software in vehicles, and mandate increased data-collection disclosures,\u201d the report\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/research-products\/report\/connected-and-autonomous-cars-security-risks-from-chinese-components\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"><\/a>\u2018There is access to the control system\u2019<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The concerns come as real-life tests reveal vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Late last year, Norwegian bus company Ruter conducted tests on two buses and found that one had potential risks linked to OTA technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is access to the control system for battery and power supply via mobile network through a Romanian SIM card. In theory, therefore, this bus can be stopped or rendered inoperable by the manufacturer,\u201d the company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ruter.no\/en\/ruter-with-extensive-security-testing-of-electric-buses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The investigation by Ruter then sparked the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/07ecb1c0-d4c0-476c-be5b-651e8feb4de1?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.K<\/a>. and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/05\/danish-authorities-in-rush-to-close-security-loophole-in-chinese-electric-buses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denmark<\/a>\u00a0to conduct their own investigations, with the U.K.\u2019s Department for Transport saying it was looking into the issue and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/oralevidence\/16718\/pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working closely<\/a>\u00a0with the country\u2019s National Cyber Security Centre.<\/p>\n<p>While these investigations were conducted on buses made by Chinese firm Yutong, Professor Shaikh said the issue goes beyond one manufacturer or country, as the technology becomes more pervasive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther sectors adopting OTA include other transport modes [such as] maritime and rail, aerospace (particularly drones), industrial machinery and robotics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>As it becomes more widespread, the RSIS\u2019 Lim stressed the importance of taking responsibility for the implementation of the tech. \u201cIt is crucial for us to be aware of this technology, and to hold entities and governments accountable for how OTA systems are applied, especially how they run quietly in the background of the technologies we use in our everyday lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/18\/over-the-air-tech-in-vehicles-poses-cybersecurity-risks.html\">Read the Full Story Here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source: CNBC<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The automotive industry\u2019s increasing use of over-the-air technology to update vehicle systems makes it more susceptible to cyberattacks, analysts say, urging more intervention in the sector.
