This week Anthropic, a leading AI company in San Francisco,\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0\u201cClaude Mythos Preview\u201d, an AI model that the startup says is too dangerous to publicly release, thanks to its exceptional cybersecurity \u2013 and cyber-attacking \u2013 capabilities. Mythos, the company claims, has found vulnerabilities in\u00a0every major browser and operating system<\/a>. In other words, this new AI model might be able to help hackers disrupt much of the world\u2019s most important software.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is Y2K-level alarming,\u201d one security expert\u00a0said<\/a>. Already, Mythos has found a 27-year-old bug in a critical piece of security infrastructure and\u00a0multiple vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel<\/a>, essential for computer systems worldwide. These weak points could threaten almost everything on the internet from the streaming services you relax with to the banking systems you rely on.<\/p>\n

If such technology was widely available and as capable as Anthropic claims, the implications could be catastrophic. Cyber-attacks are no longer a solely digital problem. Almost everything we rely on in the physical world involves software. In recent years,\u00a0airports<\/a>,\u00a0hospitals<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0transport networks<\/a>\u00a0have been crippled by cyber-attacks. Until now, attacks of this scale required serious expertise. Mythos would put that capability in reach of amateurs \u2013 and turbocharge the professionals\u2019 ability to wreak havoc.<\/p>\n

Cybersecurity experts are sounding the alarm. Anthony Grieco of Cisco, a networking and cybersecurity company, said: \u201cAI capabilities have crossed a threshold that fundamentally changes the urgency required to protect critical infrastructure \u2026 and there is no going back.\u201d Lee Klarich, head of product management at Palo Alto Networks, said the model \u201csignals a dangerous shift\u201d, and warned that \u201ceveryone needs to prepare for AI-assisted attackers\u201d.<\/p>\n
