{"id":1567,"date":"2025-03-07T06:47:09","date_gmt":"2025-03-07T06:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tsfactory.com\/forums\/?p=1567"},"modified":"2025-03-07T06:49:40","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T06:49:40","slug":"nhs-cyber-security-concerns-raised-about-move-to-windows-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tsfactory.com\/forums\/blog\/nhs-cyber-security-concerns-raised-about-move-to-windows-11\/","title":{"rendered":"NHS cyber security concerns raised about move to Windows 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Fears have been raised that the NHS could be hit by cyber security issues because organisations are not prepared to migrate to Windows 11.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From 14 October 2025, Microsoft Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates, but outdated hardware may not be able to upgrade to Windows 11.<\/p>\n<p>James Rawlinson, director of health informatics at the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, told\u00a0<em>Digital Health News<\/em>: \u201cWhen lockdown happened on 16 March 2020, within 24 hours the NHS was dishing out more laptops than it ever had done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Rotherham \u2013 and this was replicated across the country \u2013 our mix of desktop PCs to laptops shifted completely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraditionally in the NHS it was about 70% PCs and 30% laptops, but that mix is now more like 80% laptops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaptops don\u2019t last forever \u2013 they wear out and become older much faster than desktop computers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose laptops from lockdown are now five years old, which means lots of them need updating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor chief information officers (CIOs) across Yorkshire and Humber this is a real problem because the NHS capital budget hasn\u2019t grown to accommodate these things that are five-years-old in the next financial year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a tsunami of events \u2013 lots of kits that are five years old and need updating plus a major Windows update that needs accommodating, so we\u2019re all scrabbling around working out how to manage with that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis could put us at a greater cybersecurity vulnerability as we\u2019ll no longer be able to have patches and security updates for those Windows 10 devices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rawlinson added that there needs to be national capital funding provided for underlying technology infrastructure in healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft published a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windowsexperience\/2024\/10\/31\/how-to-prepare-for-windows-10-end-of-support-by-moving-to-windows-11-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a>\u00a0in October 2024 advising about how to prepare for the end of Windows 11.<\/p>\n<p>Read the Full<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fears have been raised that the NHS could be hit by cyber security issues because organisations are not prepared to migrate to Windows 11.
